Start a chapter at a school near you.
High school students can bring Steel City Codes to an elementary or middle school near them. You need basic Java or Python and a few hours a week. We help you get started.
What it takes.
You don't need teaching experience.
- Be in high school
- Chapter leaders are students in grades 9-12.
- Give a few hours a week
- Planning, coordinating volunteers, and the weekly session.
- Know basic Java or Python
- Enough to teach the fundamentals with our curriculum in hand.
How to start.
Find a location
Reach out to an elementary or middle school first. Schools are preferred for new chapters; libraries and community centers are alternatives. Most chapters meet in a classroom or library room once a week.
Recruit volunteers
Recruit enough high school mentors for a 4:1 student-to-mentor ratio.
Promote to students
Spread the word to parents and students in your community. We can share email templates.
